Debate and Discourse workshop.

Two 45-minute workshops

Objectives:
-
Students will understand and utilize the basic skills of respectful and constructive debate/argument techniques
-
Students will be able to use tone, style, volume, clarity, notes, and eye contact to make a clear and compelling argument for or against an issue important to them

Students will understand that the purpose of debating and arguing a point is not necessarily to change somebody’s opinion, but for parties on both sides of a debate to understand and think critically about an issue from all perspectives, and create a more informed opinion

Unit rationale: Debate builds on reading, writing, speaking, listening, research and cooperation skills; enhances productive leadership and democracy; promotes civic competence; and facilitates study of social studies and humanities.
